I have just set up W98se on a computer with built in LAN.

I conected it to the house router that supplies IP numbers to computers
attached to it.

But, when I check the ip number via the dos box command ipconfig /all the
result for the IP address is nowhere near the range the router gives out.
Not one figure is correct.

Any suggetsions as to what is wrong, or where the LAN is getting its IP
number from.

You are probably seeing a 169.x.x.x range IP address. This is what windows
98SE and newer assign when they don't get a response from a dhcp server.
You can try ipconfig /renew to get try to get a new IP. You can also use
Winipcfg, which is a GUI version. Probably means a bad cable, or something
similar. There is a problem connecting to the router.

The IP is probably the windows default IP (169.... i think??), have you
checked that you've enabled DHCP for the network device in control panel?

I will double check the cable, but I know the router is pushing out IPs
because this computer and another is linked through it.

But with Win98, I believe you have to specifically tell it to look for an
IP being broadcast from a router via DHCP, its not like XP in that regard.
Thats what I meant about the control panel part.
