I have a friend who's girlfriend has just been given an old(ish) pc with W95
on it...... Can he do an update like we can with XP from w98. Or will he
have to do a clean installation of w98se?

Don't ask me why he wants to use 98

It can be updated. Clean the old crap out, disable antivirus, defrag
first.

98 is better for old computers than XP is. XP is too resources-hungry.

Win98SE was the first Microsoft OS to incorporate ICS (Internet Connection
Sharing), so many people are quite happy to upgrade *old* PCs to it as a
minimum. It is quite easy to get an un-registered Win98SE upgrade from
eBay, and Microsoft support for Win98, Win98SE and WinME has been extended
to June 30th 2006. Windows ME may be the more recent of those operating
systems, but it is highly criticised by many for its stability and
compatibility issues.

For Windows 98 SE you need a 486DX / 66MHz processor, 24MB RAM and 315MB of
hard disk space.

For Windows ME you need a 150MHz processor, 32MB RAM and 645MB of hard disk
space, while the recommended spec is a 300MHz processor, 64MB RAM and 600MB
of hard disk space.

You would do best to check the spec of the PC before upgrading the OS. Your
system specifications may not meet the system requirements for WinME. You
need to see what upgrades the motherboard can take, and whether you fulfill
the minimum specifications. Hopefully you can shop on eBay for a CPU and
some extra RAM, max' it out for $30 and pick up an un-registered Windows
upgrade for $50.

You can upgrade it (there is a Microsoft Windows 98SE Upgrade), but
I'd personally backup important files, re-format the HD, and do a
clean install of 98SE (you can still use the Upgrade CD if you have
your original 95 CD). Of course, this assumes you have the proper
drivers for all hardware and etc.

Certainly if you have problems with the upgrade you should then try a
clean install.

if the machine has a small amount of ram (16 megs for example) keep win95

win98 will function with 32 megs...but 64megs or more is desirable

chances are an old machine would not run XP very well

128 megs would be an absolute minimum...but 256megs
is really needed

The "old(ish) pc" is one reason for using 98/98SE ! XP will choke in an older
box.

Take it from one who beta'ed 98 and SE (got my Memphis Tshirt)

Both ways will work okay, I remember years ago when I upgraded
and I simply installed over win95b. No real worries but I do prefer
to wipe the HD and install from scratch.

And there is NOTHING wrong with Win98.

heeheehee, you've been smoking something REAL strong to believe that......
:D

I hope that was in referance to any windows product :-)

Windows 98se is probalby as good as any other windows product. Seems that
many are still running that priduct as MS decided to support it for a few
more years.

WinXP is so much better than 98, it actually has a fair amount of
stability, it's sooooo much more secure than 98, and, well, its just
nicer..... :P

Steve

P.S. to be fair, I used 98 for many years and its not a bad product, but
XP is just so much better
P.P.S my argument is shite, but I've been up now for almost, wait for it!,
_12_ hrs! and I need some more sleep...... :D

If I upgraded to XP it would cost me to much money in updating all my
current software, plus XP is unstable and has too many unfixed bugs.

When I upgraded from Win95 to Win98 I didn't have to pay a penny
for any updated software, the same when I upgraded to WinME.

Win98 is still a good OS, if WinME wasn't around I would still be on
win98.
