I've been reading all the posts about the Swen virus and find them very
interesting because I think I have the virus and can't get rid of it. How
can I tell if the infected emails I receive are sent by my own computer or
from a third party? I have viewed the internet headers but that doesn't
help. Here's my situation:

Every day, I get about three to five emails with warnings from my Norton
program that they contain dreaded virus. I have done a complete scan with
Norton, I have downloaded and executed the FixSwen file plus the Swen Patch
for Internet Explorer. I have even gone a step further, per instructions
from Norton, and repaired a few files in my register. I update Norton weekly
and do a complete scan daily. Norton shows no infected files.
Notwithstanding, I continue to get this very annoying virus message in my
emails. In all other respects, my computer works fine. I send and receive
emails to/from other people with no apparent problems. I have had this
problem for several months.

I am to the point where I'm considering doing a complete recovery of my hard
drive and reinstalling everything but I still don't know if that's going to
resolve the problem. How can I tell if I have the virus? If I have it, how
can I get rid of it? In reading some of your posts, it sounds like somebody
or thing has my email address and shall continue to send me infected
emails.I should just feel content that I have a program that catches it. Any
responses will be greatly appreciated.

You do not have SWEN, your are just getting infection attempts from
people who do. If you are only getting 3-5 a day consider yourself
fortunate .. I'm getting 50-100, all headed off at my ISP's mail server.
Just keep your AV up to date, install the MS critical patches, run a
proper firewall, and quit worrying about it.

Your ISP will likely tell you if/when you are the source of these, when
people like me bitch to them about the infection attempts originating
from your PC.

Posting to usenet with your real (from the look of it) Email address
does not help, since SWEN harvests email addresses from NEWS (hence the
name).

All you can do is...

1. Keep your AV package up-to-date
2. Create email "rules" to auto-delete the offending messages
3. Petition your ISP to install AV software on their respective email servers.

I think you don't comprehend what you read. No, you don't have the
virus.

I have the same problem and wonder if it helps!
