How do I get rid of this? My Avg antivirus detects it, but wont get rid of
it?
Thanks to all.

It actually detects this virus only while Trend Micro online anti-virus is
running, asks for a prompt (so I delete), but the actual scan doesn't find
it(??), it only finds the eicar file.
I don't want to go out and buy another anti-virus program, I had Norton when
I first got the pc in '98, but the following year I had to buy the upgrades,
so I don't believe in forever buying something I already bought (unless I
really have to).
Thanks to all for any help.

sounds like it's false alarming on trend's definition file...

how about services? would you pay a kid thousands of dollars to mow
your lawn every 2 weeks for the rest of your life or would you rather
just pay him 5 bucks today?

it's the same thing with av upgrades... those upgrades are the result
of a service.. you don't have to buy them if you don't want, but you
won't get the benefits of the service the av company is providing if
you don't...

Running two AVs at the same time may lead to unexpected results. AVG
autoprotect shouldn't be running while you have Trend Micro scanning. I
take it that Trend Micro shows no virus, and AVG shows no virus when it
is the only AV runnning. Kenston is a 2 year old PE infecting virus - you
probably have no virus at all.

What's PE?

Portable executable, or win32 version of a .exe file.
My system certainly act's like it's got a virus....really slow, things that

I can almost guarantee it is.

From your posts headers,
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4807.1700

This antique version will auto-execute malware that uses
what's called the i-frame expolit.

While I hate installing updates from m$, since I don't trust
them not to add new problems, it has become necessary to do so.

If you're not willing to apply m$ patches every few days, at least
make sure you don't expose any more of their software to the net,
then you have to. Choose safer browser, news, and email software.
Remove any client software you don't need, like netbios, etc.

Regards, Dave Hodgins

(internet dial-up)
I have no doubt that I've got something infecting the pc.
I've turned off two other av's while I was running another, and still can't
locate the virus.
It all started with the Startpage.B virus that Avg found.

Thanks for the tips and info...guess I'll have to bite the bullet and buy
some kind of AV (AGAIN! bought some when I first got the pc in '98, then
found out I had to upgrade every year.)
I just wish for the price I pay here in Canada (~$90 C + 15% tax) that it
would be good for a few years at least.

As the other poster said, update your browser, apply all MS patches. As
for an AV, you could get the DOS version of F-Prot (free for personal
use).

Since you *may* have a virus, boot to DOS, then run F-Prot. You may also
have a trojan, and F-Prot may or may not catch that. Try the evaluation
copy of "The Cleaner" from Moosoft.

Well, Kurt, are you reading any of the posts about McAffee and Norton? How
crappy their products are?
What's the point paying for crap when you get it for free?
Paying for something doesn't guarantee satisfaction, otherwise I would buy
in a second.

generally no... i don't bother... since i don't use either of those
products i really can't help folks resolve their technical or support
issues with those products...
What's the point paying for crap when you get it for free?

that's a different argument entirely... before you were arguing against
having to pay for updates to a product you already paid for.. now
you're arguing against paying at all... are you trying to elicit my
opinion on this new topic?

just because you aren't satisfied with a product doesn't mean it's
crappy, it just means it doesn't suit your needs/wants... all the major
developers provide evaluation versions of their products to allow you
to try before you buy so if you are unhappy about your purchase, stop
whining to me about it and go find something that is worth your money...
