Thanks in advance for any help . . .

My computer, running XP Home Edition, has had a dose of newish
W32.Gobot.A . . . Norton detected it, and have tried to clear it out,
disabling system restore etc . . . i'm left with a file that symantec
confirms is corrupt . . . and I think it is a common symptom of the
virus . . . it is called "!ReadMe.exe" . . . can I simply delete
this file - from Norton - and forget about it, or is life more
complicated than that . . .

Life is complicated. =)
From the looks of
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.gobot.a.html,
if you have the ReadMe.exe it means you were infected over a local
network. If you have a home network, check the other machine(s) as
they are likely infested as well - in fact one of them is the
*source*. Also even on a home network, you shouldn't share
everything. If you don't have a home network, do this anyway...
