I recently upgraded from windows 98 to windows 2000 on an
old computer. The modem and sound card are not working
and I don't know the manafacturer or model #'s of either.
You're going to have to provide more information. It's a driver thing and
you'll need to know the make and model of the components to resolve the
problem.
Open the case, locate the modem and sound cards, and start looking for
identifying information such as the manufacturer and board numbers. Search
at Google on the various identifying marks.
If the modem and sound are integrated on the motherboard, go to the
motherboard manufacturer's web site and dig around there.
Some generic manufacturers simply utilize known manufacturer's chipsets.
Look at the various chips for more identifying information.
The short story is that Windows won't tell you what the hardware is; it will
tell you only what drivers are installed. (Refrain from flaming, please.
It's a general statement. Yes, Windows will tell you about some hardware in
lieu of drivers, but not in this situation.) It sounds like your old Win98
drivers are incompatible with Win2K and Win2K might not have suitable
replacement drivers in its core release.
