Hi,

Windows 2000 Pro SP4 used as samll workgroup internal server (less then 5
users).
Has been working with windows auto update disabled ( I guess), until one day
during server maintenance work it couldn't connect to Internet with MSIE.
On status bar appears that site is found but downloading and opening any
site times out.
Also I can't open network properties panel from control panel now, network
settings window just hangs.
Also Outlook Express can't connect to pop3 server (Outlook is used only for
testing and maintenance work).
In Event log doesn't seem to be any new or unfamiliar events.
Ipconfig doesn't reveal anythin abnormal either.

For testing purpose I installed Opera browser and it can access Internet
normally.

I guess it's wise to find out what happened but what to check next?
Any good ideas?

As the Internal network is working normally and all server clients can
access the server database normally I'm not sure if it's wise to reinstall
anything bigger right now.

Hi Peter,

I've seen similar behavior and the culprit was one of those toolbars that
gets installed, like google or even msn.

Try opening your installed programs and check if you can recognize all the
installed programs. If there's any entry there that is not familiar to you,
check it's precedence and if you cannot find how it got there, get rid of it.

Beware not to break the things. In my case it was easy to find the program,
because it was listed as BLABLABLA ToolBar.

HTH.

Hi,

I today visted the so called server once again.
There weren't any menus to uninstall, as expected, as noone hadn't been
accessing the PC.

Still I can access web with Opera browser, which I installed after MSIE had
failed.
Also from control panel I can't open Network settings, as nothing happens
when I click to Network icon.
