My system won't boot up. When I turn on the computer it goes to a screen
that shows my installed devices and prompts

"Press F1 to Resume"
"Hit <f12> if you want to boot from the network"

If I hit F1 it goes to the MS splash screen and just spins for a while
before going back to the previous screen. Pressing F8 takes to the safe mode
options which non work.

I am assuming that I need to use the recovery console however I never
created an emergencey repair disk. Will the recovery console still work?

If I have to reinstall win2k will it erase any files? I started to run it
but got a message the it will delete the my documents folder. I have
subfolders under that that I can't lose so I stopped the install.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks Patrick.

So if I do a parallel install of win2k I will be able
to access the files in the old partition?

You can recover your documents either from a parallel install or

If you are getting an F1 to Resume, you would presumably have a problem at
boot. That problem could be simple (keyboard error, Floppy diskette
failure). Or it could indicate something more serious.

What is the error that requires you to press f1 to boot?

Have you tried the fixmbr command from the recovery console
accessed through setup? Excerpt from windows help:
================
fixmbr [device_name]
Parameter
device_name
The device (drive) on which you want to write a new master boot record. The
name can be obtained from the output of the map command. An example of a
device name is:

\Device\HardDisk0.

Example

The following example writes a new master boot record to the device
specified:

fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0

Notes

a.. If you do not specify a device_name, a new master boot record will be
written to the boot device, which is the drive on which your primary system
is loaded

I don't any error messages. If I press F1 it goes to the
Windows start up screen, will sit there for a while like
it's trying to boot. IE I get all bars and the blue line
is going, but it eventually goes back to the screen where
I have to select F1. If I hit F8 and go to set up, I've
tried all the safe mode aoptions and pretty much get the
same results.

If I use the recovery console and try to run a reapair
that comes back sying it can't find windows or something
like that. I can get to the WINNT prompt via the recovery
console and am wondering if I copy the files in the repair
folder to a disk and try to use that as an ERD will that
work? So I tried to copy them and I keep getting a message
that says access denied.

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve
