After an automatic update, my desktop is gone, along with most icons and
shortcuts. Outlook is now empty of all emails and address book. All favorites
and cookies are gone. When I go to Programs, even those shortcuts are
missing. Is any of this recoverable? (I know the shortcuts can be rebuilt,
but Outlook is the biggee) This is the second time in 2 years this has
happened!

Sounds like profile corruption. If the profile is corrupt, you can rename
the profile(while logged on as local admin), then when the user logs on
again a new profile will be created from the image in \default user. You can
then copy over the items you need from the renamed profile. Copy the folder
contents not the folders themselves. When your sure you have all you need,
you can delete the renamed profile(s). Use the import function of your
e-mail software. Don't overwrite ntuser.dat

That doesn't work because the new user doesn't show under users. A phantom
user was created that doesn't show up anywhere; ie there isn't any logon.

I did fix the problem by using regedit and changing all entries with the new
logon to the old. Then everything went back to normal.

You can hold the shift key while logging off to logon as the new user.
