I have a new Windows 2000 Terminal server that sometimes
drops all connected users (around 40.) It is very
strange, the server does not lock up or reboot, and the
users are able to log back in right away. There is no
evidence of this happening in the Event Viewer. It also
does not matter how they are connected...some are on the
local LAN, some are coming in on T1...but everyone gets
dropped.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Bobby

similar topic:

Random disconnects are a mish-mash of things that can be
from any of the following:

1) packet loss
2) encryption problems
3) transient network problems with switches
4) delayed packets arriving and causing retransmissions
5) overloaded network infrastructure, including an
overworked server network card, switches and hubs.
6) bandwidth, or lack thereof

There are probably tons of other things that can cause
disconnects, but these were the first few that came into
my head. If your underlying network structure is not
stable in some manner, then you will undoubtably see
problems, which may manifest themselves with disconnects
in the RDP sessions. If you want to test this, try
pinging a client's IP address and see if there is packet
loss and excess latency.

Also, you might want to try and increase network transmit
and receive buffers on your network card(s) of your
terminal server. You should also enable keep alives and
possibly increase the value of TCPMaxDataRetransmissions
to 10 (support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;170359). Both these values will help to stabilize your
network.
