When I try to upgrade from W2K to XP using an upgrade CD,
my machine reboots (as expected) and then hangs, with a
very faint image of the WIndows XP logo on my monitor.

Any clues?

Try a clean-install parallel to Windows 2000. Upgrade installations
may cause problems and are more instable than clean installations. You
can then keep Windows 2000 until Windows XP is set up for your
purposes.

Tried straight reinstall rather than upgrade and same
thing happens. CD is from a genuine boxed copy upgrade.
Also tried MS Select CD with same result

Disconnect all hardware that is not necessary to run Windows. Retry
the installation now.
