Hello all

I have a friend who is always stuffing up his system. I want to be able to
dial up his machine and be able to fix it.

Both pcs are win2k and have modems.
What would be best, using windows 2000, create vpn over internet, or install
pc anywhere or similar.
If PC anywhere is best option I still need to ftp the file over then telnet
to install it?/

thanks anyone and all

First, recognize that you must secure his machine VERY carefully and you
both must use LONG, COMPLEX passwords with lockout enabled.

(More than 14 characters WITH complexity.)

What would be best, using windows 2000, create vpn over internet, or install
pc anywhere or similar.

VPN is harder (a bit) to get working at first and of course is usually
faster.
BUT if he "stuffs up" his PC there is more chance this won't work (he messes
up the Network etc.)

Maybe BOTH -- VPNs are pretty much similar to the modem so get the modem
working first and then think through the security issues a second time
before
proceding.
If PC anywhere is best option I still need to ftp the file over then telnet
to install it?/

If you RRAS in, you get only "network access", shares, and other programs
that give you access so you might want a "terminal connection" -- Telnet
server
comes with Win2000 but it isn't REAL secure. Same for FTP server.

If he upgrades to XP you can use "Remote Assistance" and if he upgrades to
XP-Pro
you get "Remote Desktop" TOO.

If you use PCAnywhere, there is no need for a VPN connection if the computer already has a internet connection. Just be sure to
use very good security on the box. Windows XP has built in remote desktop assistance which would greate improve your ability
to assist him.

Thank you,
