my w2k sometimes re-boots when I attempt to activate connection to local
network
why is that and what might be a remedy?

Hello aa,

Are there any errors in the event log?

Best regards

Use msconfig.exe (http://www.svrops.com/svrops/dwnldoth.htm)
to disable every task under the Startup tab, then check if the
problem persists.

Note that you may not have any virus protection while certain
startup tasks are disabled.

Thanks. I have downloaded msconfig.exe from the place you indicated. Yet
before starting it I would like to understand what exactly I will be doing.
Do you mean that the problem might be caused by a program launched from
Startup and disabling them one by one I will find the culprit?

Exactly. I once dealt with an identical problem and it was caused
by a misbehaving virus scanner.

You can launch the Event Viewer by typing eventvwr.exe in the
Start/Run box.

Thanks. The problem with my problem is that it pronounces itself
occationaly.
Sometimes it might not be there for several days, sometimes it happens
several times a day and I cannot figure out the pattern. But it alway
happens when I have some woek unsaved :-(

There is your key: Work for several hours on the same unsaved
document, then make a network connection and hey presto! -
the machine will reboot.

Seriously: If the Event Logger fails to reveal the cause of the
problem then you will have to disable a couple of startup programs
at a time for one week until you know what's going on.

Ye, i t looks like I have a several month long R&D project on my hands.
Thanks
If this matters - since recently I strated havong problems with VPN
connection with my provider Error 789 Attempt to connect L2TP failed because
of an error happened at security level during communication with the remote
computer.
This seem to be linked to Zone Alarm for when I shut down Zone Alarm, the
connection is made quickly. If after that I start Zone Alarm, the
connection is broken within several seconds or minutes. The IP adress of
VPN in question is listed in Zone Alarm firewall listing as trusted - might
it be relevant?
I also have Kaspersky but like Zone Alarm it has beein installed 2 years ago
and caused no probs until recently.

any known virus which can do this?
So re-install OS before thowing the machine away?

More than likely bad hardware or possible driver corruption.
