W2K Server Can't Translate Network Address

I have a file server sitting in a corner running W2K Server. About 7
developers use this server for various purposes. This week, I discovered
that this server could not access any URL in IE or ping a URL at command
prompt. If I replace the URL with its IP address, IE and ping work fine. I
checked that both DNS servers were specified the same way as many other PCs
in the company. What else may cause this? Thanks.

I resinstalled W2K Server in a separate directory. I can access Internet
using URLs (www....com) if I boot to this installation.

See if the old installation has a hosts file mapping many domains to
127.0.0.1.

No. The old installation's hosts file in c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc
directory is dated 1999. It contains only the std localhost entry.

Hmmmm. Routing? Can the server ping the DNS server? ie. Maybe the machine
has a gateway to the Internet, and it has the correct IP address for an
internal DNS server; but it does not have a route or it has a bad static
route to the DNS server.

Check the routing tabel.

Yes. The server has one IP address of 10.1.1.x, and default gateway is
10.1.1.2. Two DNS servers are 64.105... that can be pinged by this server.

I'll compare its routing table with a different computer...

The metric number is 1 while other computers are 20. Is that supposed to be
automatically maintained? Anyway, I synced route table and the problem still
exists.
