Wow, when I found my laptop in sleep mode, awakened it and
found that I could not access the file that had been
active, I had no idea that I was about to get an "E"
ticket on Billy Gates' roller coaster. In forcing the
closure to the file through Task Manager, I noted that two
icons were missing from my tray - IE6 and Outlook Express.
In looking at the Program Directory, they were gone from
there too! In going to the file directory, the rest of the
files were there but in the IE directory IEXPLORE.EXE was
gone as was mismn.exe from the Outlook Express directory.
The rest of the files were there. I immediately thought of
a repair and followed the instructions to reinstall W2K
but keep existing settings. The two files came back but
when I try to access anything that is even remotely
associated with Office, I get a message telling me it is
either not installed or not associated. When I try to do
repair on office I get a message that the Windows
Installer is not working. I checked the file associations
area and all files are still associated. In trying to
reinstall my virus software, I received a message about
the installer as well.
Suggestions? It looks like the Windows Installer files are
corruted to me but I have no idea where they are and how
to fix them.
