Hi. I just bought an used computer HP, labelled with an original
Microsoft OEM License for W2K Pro and related Product Key,
but i have no installation disk (the HD is clear, too).
How can i install W2K with that product key?
TIA

You have a license BUT you need the media with the OS to install from.
Sort of like having a drivers license and no car, you will get nowhere
fast.

I think buying a new OEM disk is the same that buying a new license,
but i think i don't need it.
Couldn't i make a copy of a CD from a friend, instead? Am I allowed to
use it?

Yes, indeed. And I also think that the product key on his HP is
probably tied to HP BIOS locked cds, it may only work with HP
reinstallation disks. Even if he has a drivers license, if he finds a
car there is no saying that his key will start it, it has to be the
right make of car...

You can't. The OEM disk that originally installed win2k is the one that
carries the license and product key. Without that disk, your license is
useless. You can obtain an OEM disk illegally on eBay - many are sold
off there, but it is illegal as any such disk must have already been
provided for use with a particular machine, even if it has not been
used. But who's going to tell Microsoft? Alternatively buy a retail copy
for a lot more money then you don't have the licensing problem.

You are welcome to try a copy of a CD, be sure it is a Generic OEM, not
a branded "BIOS locked" one. The CD itself is not the license, and
replacements could be had BEFORE they were so far out of production.

True :-(
This is the W2K EULA: "You may transfer all of your rights...you
transfer all of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT (including all component parts,
the media and printed materials, any upgrades, this EULA and, if
applicable, the Certificate(s) of Authenticity)"

http://proprietary.clendons.co.nz/licenses/eula/windows2000professional-eula.htm

So, yesterday i call back the seller and I asked him to search and give
me the OEM disk and the other materials. After he gave me those things,
the license was truly transferred to me and i finally could install the
software.
This morning my little son put the OEM disk and the rest in the
garbage.
Luckily i had made (according to the EULA) a backup copy, before :-)
