I had a great running gigahertz network with a DLink switch. I
installed "UltraVNC" software on one computer. This software is
supposed to make it possible to run or repair computers remotely over
the Internet. That is when the troubles started. Now my network does
not run correctly and there are additional computers listed on my
"Computers Near Me" and additional groups on my MS network, not just
WORKGROUP which is what I was using. I cannot use network printers or
see other computers actually on my network. I uninstalled the rogue
software. What can I do? Anyone out there with experience with this
problem? Ed

I have a strong suspicion that your networking problems
are unrelated to UltraVNC, that it is a mere coincidence
that they happened at the same time. I suggest you look
elsewhere: Try to remember what things you did other
than installing this product.

Thank You.

UltraVNC is a trie and true program that I absolutely could not live
without. I seriously doubt that it has anything to do with your problems.
The Free version UltraVNC is not secured. It is plain text authentication
and runs on an unencrypted stream. So you should NOT use it directly on the
Internet, but you can use it over a VPN.

If you can see other computers and workgroups, likely it is because you are
connected to them. Either someone has connected their laptop computers or
something, or you've inter-connected with another network. Those additional
workgroups and computers show up in "My Network Places" when they broadcast
an announcement to the IP subnet they are on. The very fact that you can see
them proves that (unless you connected to someon else's WINS server) they
are on your network and using the same IP address range ad subnet mask as
you.
