Dear People,

Brutal problem.

Upgrade from Win98 Machine--New HDD on New 2.6Ghz Pentium
Machine, 40GHDD, 512Mb Mm, CD Rom, USB, etc., etc. (Normal
Clone CPU Box).

Original 40Gb HDD had Win 98 on it. Then put Windows 2000
Professional. First installation uncovered 3 Viruses--but
then cleansed. Then put Norton's AV Professional on the
system. First reinstallation--got system up and running.
Finally, could neteork to Internet.

Problems remained. W2K system keeps bombing out
randomly. Usually either a 45 Second countdown to reboot
or svchost error.

Decide to upgrade to Service Pack 4 (SP4). SP4 install
fails: Comes up with "SP4iis" dilog which says: "Unable
to connect to metabase."

Net search reveals NOTHING.

Problem with reinstall of W2k is that I cannot make a
NETWORK DIALUP ICON to dial into the net. Bringing up
NETWORK CONNECTION WIZARD, only allows 2 choices with
Dial up to private network
Conenct to a private network through the internet
Connect directly to another computer

Completely greyed out. (Cannot select their radio buttons)

When I fill out the two remaing choices, the Wizard fails.

[Only choices avaiable:
Dial up to the Internet And:
Accept Incoming Connections ]7

If I attempt to make network connection and fill out the
Wizard, after filling out all the information (tel number;
Dial up name: User ID, and Password) the final screen
comes up with:
"CONNECTION TO [BLAH] IS NOT A VALID NAME. THE ENTRY NAME
MUST CONTAIN AT LEAST ONE CHARACTER THAT IS NOT A SPACE
AND CANNOT BEGING WITH A PERIOD.

This error Loops and anything you enter cannot get it to
go away.

"IF" I try other choice on the Wizard {I want to sign up
for New Internet Account OR I want to transfer my existing
internet accuonty to this computer RETURNS this error
message:

"THE INTERNET CONNECTION HAS NTO FISNED SETTING UP YOUR
IINTERNET CONNECTION. ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO CLOSE THE
CONENCTION?

The only solution to this error message is to hit "YES" as
hitting NO will just bring the same error message up.

I have removed my NORTONS AV computely. (No "uninstall" I
had to WIPE it with Norton's WIPE FILE.

I have shut down every SERVICE I can think known to man.

I have RE#INSTALLED Windows 2000 Professional ad infinitum-
-yet the error stays.

This si a brutal problem--and I have a mchine I cannot get
online to the net.

DOES ANYONE HAVE A SOLUTION OR DOES ANYONE HAVE ACCESS TO
MICROSOFT WHO CAN GIVE ME A GUESS WHAT IS GOING ON?

[Ruther analysis is lending me to a SP4iis scripting,
ism.dll problem or a "metabase" problem. FTP II problem]
Again, all Iw ant is to Windows 2000 Pro to run.

Hello

I would recommend you to install latest security updates especially
Windows2000-KB823980-x86-ENU.exe
Windows2000-KB835732-x86-ENU.EXE

Just installing the SP4 doesnt solves the problem.

Report back the results.
