I have a w2k server running ad/dns, and the machine is
not able to see the internet. I have this machine behind
a d-link router which is performing dhcp for all of my
clients. The clients are able to route to the internet
but the server can't. Everthing I read says not to hard
code the routers address in the nic's dsn entry, but i'm
not sure what record i need to build in the w2k dns to
allow it to look outside to the internet. do i build
an 'A' record or a PTR record. both want a host name and
my router does not have one. can anyone help??

Since this is AD you must not use the router's address for DNS on any domain
member, at least if they are Win2k, XP or Win2k3. Doing so will cause
errors, very slow start ups and logons. You must use the local DNS hosting
the AD domain zone(usually the DC). For DNS to resolve internet names you
will either need a delegated root (the ".") forward lookup zone, you can
just delete this zone, which is what most do, then enable a forwarder to the
router or ISP's DNS. Read the following KB starting at step 3 for
instructions on deleting the root zone and enabling forwarders.
