Two weeks ago some of my W2K clients (all Dell Gx240's, originating
from the same ghost) began to "hang" during boot-up for 2-30 minutes.
I have no clue about what causes this so I'll report symptoms I have
found and hope somebody recognizes this:
* Windows is more or less fully loaded when it hangs and most Windows
apps can be run. Programs that require antivirus check can't be run
(see below).
* Network connection icons haven't been loaded to the system tray.
* One program that is affected is Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition
7.5 (also 7.6 and 7.61). Scans are aborted with a "aborted by user"
message. Real-time protection is deactivated. If activated, it
immediately is deactivated again.
* Clients have Swedish W2K with SP2, SP3 or SP4
* If I unplug an affected computer from the network, reboot it, sign
on and then plug in the patch cable again, everything works fine.
Until next reboot.
* The problem comes and goes. One day your computer works fine, next
you have the problem again.
* If you wait long enough the system finishes the boot-up routines and
everything works fine again. Until next reboot.
I don't think it's a virus as only Gx240's are affected. We have
another 100 clients that don't show these symptoms.
