I have a sytem that was installed before I worked here. I
don't know the password for the network access. In the
network the XP system and the NT system have no problem
with full access to the 1 W2K computer. My other systems
running W98 and W2k can see the computer but is being
asked for the password and username everytime the try to
access it.Does anyone have an answer for the net newbie?

Are these machines part of a domain or is this a workgroup? If it's part of a workgroup, then the machines that can access this
box probably have a saved password. The other machines do not. If you don't have an account and password to access the
machine, then you will not be able to access it. It's that simple. You can try having one of the clients who can access the
machine attempt to logon to it locally. If they have the proper permissions then they may be able to create you a user account
and password that would allow you access to the system.

If the machines are part of a domain, if you have domain admin rights, then you should be able to access the box.

Thank you,
Mike Johnston

I am having the same trouble, except I have had this
computer from new. If there was a password that would
work, I would know it. I am trying to see the w2k from a
95 machine, and as you said, I can see it but it asks for
a password to access any of the resources on the 95.
Funny thing is, the w2k can see and access anything I have
shared on the 95.

If you ever figure it out, please share with me.

Must be a plague of it going around, Cos I've the same prob only on reverse,
I have just built a W2K, And connected to a lappie running 98 and another
desktop running XP as a workgroup.

Although all 3 machines will ping each other quite happily and the W2K
machine can see the other machines and share their files etc It won't let
the other 2 machines anywhere near it

Keeps asking for a password which was never asked for or specified during
setup, I have tried the administrator passwork but that won't let me in

If anyone knows of a workaround for this could they please Email it to me,
as I'm sure Mr gates would not like to think that a workaround was in the
public domain

To email me drop the "h" and the addie becomes alive

Thanks for any assistance

I found a clip in the knowledge base Article 139592. It
didn't solve my problem but sounded like it would. Check
it out.

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts
exist on all computers (W2K/XP's). Got File- and printersharing loaded? Is
Netbios over TCP/IP enabled (Advanced properties of TCP/IP, tab WINS)?
