I am using W2000 PRO w/SP4 and all updates, and today I purchased a
new Canon IP4200 printer. The software will not install. I worked
for over 4 hours with Canon tech people, and they tell me the problem
is not theirs but Microsoft Windows 2000 is not recognizing the USB
port.
The software installs to the point where you turn on the printer and
start communicating with computer to print a test page and align the
heads. This is where it fails. HOWEVER, if you look in the lower
right system tray, when you click on the little UNPLUG OR EJECT
HARDWARE, the IP4200 is shown and you can stop it. So Windows there
is recognizing the printer.
However, if you go to START, SETTINGS, PRINTERS and right click on the
Canon IP4200 Printer, PROPERTIES, PORTS there are no USB ports listed,
only LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, and COM1 - COM4, no USB ports are listed.
Canon technical people tried just about everything they could think
of, and came to the conclusion that it was Windows 2000 PRO problem in
that the driver is not correct.
I called Microsoft and finally was told that they would be glad to
help me, at the cost of $249 per hour, chump change for Bill Gates.
I went to Microsoft Knowledge Base and apparently there are lots of
issues with 2000 and USB ports, but since there were literally
hundreds and hundreds of articles my eyes gave out before I could find
anything exactly like I experienced.
The drivers/software have been uninstalled-installed numerous times,
USB PCI to USB drivers changed, everything Canon could think of.
Is there anyone out there with suggestion on how I can get 2000 to
recognize this printer? The motherboard is an ABIT KG7.
ALSO, my digital camera and my flatbed scanner and my Minolta digital
Film scanner all work just fine on the exact same ports, go figure.
I'm leaning toward the Canon drivers being screwed up, but of course
they won't admit that, blaming Microsoft or others.
Anyone experience problems like this and have any suggestions on how
to get this printer driver to install correctly?
Thank you very much for any suggestions.
