I bought a 250 Gb portable USB drive, and would like to use it on my
W2000 system, so I can move it between computers. Is there any way
to make W2000 Pro recognize large drives without having to partition
it into smaller segments?

Thanks

It doesn't even acknowledge the drive at all, even after a reboot.
I did a Microsoft search on the subject and it says to check the
registry key "LBA = 1" and it already was on 1, as I have all the
Windows 2000 updates that are available through UPDATE. The drive
works on my XP laptop USB port. BTW, when you turn on the drive with
the USB line connected, the little window comes up USB MASS STORAGE
DEVICE INSTALLED or something like that, and you can disable it by
clicking the little icon in the system tray USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE.
So the computer installs it but it doesn't appear anywhere in the
drive lineup.

On second thoughts, having read your other post re mobo, if this is the same
PC then post back after having done the repair installation and installed
the correct mobo drivers

You led us to believe you can partition it but just not as one partition. Is
this still the case?

Sorry I was not clear. I am back on the Epox motherboard, took the
ASUS out.

The drive is a WD 250 Gb in external USB case, not partitioned, one
single 250 Gb drive. Works fine on my Thinkpad laptop w/XP.

When I put it in the W2000 Pro machine, with all Windows updates and
turn the drive on, nothing happens, not recognized at all.

I reboot the machine w/USB drive running, now nothing happens.
However, if I go into ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS and click on DISK
MANAGEMENT, the drive shows up as USB-250 Gb, Healthy. However, no
drive letter is assigned anywhere that I can see. I tried "Make Drive
Active", now it reads Healthy and Active, and when I rebooted the
little USB Icon in system tray appeared with USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE
listed, but system has not assigned any letter to the drive anywhere
that I can see.

FINALLY got it. After trying everything else, tried assigning it a
drive letter (G: in this case) and now it recognizes the drive. Will
see how it works out, as I would like to archive the C: drive onto
this drive, then reinstall the ASUS motherboard and see if there is
any way to fix the LAN problem. If it screws up with the REPAIR
INSTALL function can always go back and restore the C: drive.

Thanks for your help fellows will report back if anything changes.

I don't see how that relates to the multiple partition question but glad to
hear it's sorted. BTW I wouldn't have marked the partition as active unless
you intend to boot from the device.

Dave;

How do I remove the "Active" status, I was trying everything just to
see if it would recognize the drive.
