W200+SP4 locks on bootup at Starting Up screen

When I install W2000 Professional plus install SP4 over it, my computer locks up at the GUI startup screen with
the "Starting Up" taskbar, but only when either or both my netword card and/or my soundcard are physically
installed. If both are removed, I can install W2000+SP4 and boot fine. If I then shut down and install either or both cards, W2000_SP4 locks up on boot at the above.

This is on a physical computer which I had W2000_SP3 and then SP4 installed on before, and I wiped it
(repartitioned the hard drive) because of some strange unidentifiable virus-type infestation had slowed/modified suth apps behavior as IE and opening My Computer. I believed a wipe/reload would be fairly straightforward, but am
running into this seemingly insurmountable problem! The net and sound cards installed on the previous
W2000+SP installation just fine.

Thank you.

try moving your network card and/or sound card to a different slot... Also
try a different sound card and NIC if that don't work.
