I am running the Hardware in my sig. the machine runs all 04 OS perfectly,
'cept Vista32Bit. I upgraded to the VX2235WM from the Benq FP72E (a 22" 16:10
and 17" 4:3 respectively) first on the 8800GTS 320MB, everything was fine,
when one day, the desktop after loading Vista, just dissapeared, there was
nothing, no wall paper/gadgets/taskbar/ icons...nothing, except for my mouse
cursor, and by default a window "My documents" open, and showing contents. At
first i was under the impression that it was my GPU/DVI cable/or the LCD,
after 03 months (in pakistan there are NO consumer rights...so you fight or
call in favours to RMA, and then get a new replacement piece) i got
everything changed, still no dice......

i used the 163.04/09 and the latest WHQL 169.25....no display
used the VX2235 drivers from MS update nad WHQL's from Viewsonic's website
Changed the GPU to the 8800GT XFX, in the hope that just perhaps the
broken VC2 engine might be causing troubles, used the same
det's......yup...still blank screen
all the remaining OS's on my singular RIG, are all ok with the DVI connected
to and fro from the 8800GT and the VX2235WM, but VISTA blanks out the
desktop, CTRL+ALT+DEL, brings me back to the loading screen, or presents the
window with tabs for running svc's, Proc Load, background tasks...but never
windows desktop

please help....after such a long time (and a huge amt. of fights) i still
have a vista which is blanked out, apart from the remaing 2 OS, which are
working flawlessly....
i am running the A8NSLi Premium (an NF4 SLi) with a Corsair HX620, all
VOltages are in the green zone, no excessive load on any rail, checked by
multimeter

please advise

What happens on a F8 safe mode boot? If safe mode opens properly run a full
virus scan before trying normal mode again.

first off, i am AMAZED at the RAPID RESPONSE i recieved here vs.. the average
03 days or more while talking to vendor for support.....
thankyou

now on with the discussion.........
on safe mode i can see the desktop and everything, i have run 3 different
Viruscans (NOD32, Mcafee, and norton latest def's)on the partition where,
VIsta is installed (apart from the Kaspersky 7.1 that i installed in
vista32)...all of them report a clean bill of health,

some of the fixes/workarounds i had implemented

using a VGA cable on a DVI to VGA adaptor and then installing the det's
using 640x480 mode to boot into normal vista32
using no det's aka no gaming/aero
connectiong the DVI cable back into the GPU, after a no desktop boot,
causing the PC to reinstall drivers for the VX, after which a couple of
boot's later , i have to
repeat this "fix"

Paradigm,
Boot into safe mode.
Fire up system restore and restore your system to the date when everything
was working fine.
Carlos

Running multiple anti-virus products can cause problems. I suggest you
reduce it to one. It is not a matter of overkill but the scanners clash.
While it works to run multiple anti-spyware apps it does not work very well
to run multiple anti-virus apps.

After the My documents folder opens on a normal boot can you close it and go
back to your desktop? If yes then it appease that you have put the my
documents folder in to startup folder.

First of Colin, i am running the 03 different AV, which have been installed
in the 03 diff OS i have installed (2K,XP,and the 2nd XP which i gain access
to when i press F8 on boot and select the 3rd drive where the OS is
installed) so these Antivirii are run on the entire PC, incl the partition
where Vista is installed, i do hope you understand, every OS installed in the
PC has it's own Antivirus, and i have scanned the entire PC and all it's
partitions using each one of those AV's

secondly JW, the "my documents" is opened by default is some screwed up,
Vista's issue, i WOULD NOT put the my documents in the startup section for
any reason whatsoever, it is just there when VISTA is doing one of those "no
desktop" thingie, using it i am able to browse to the windows folder and
using the control panel icons and stuff, can uninstall , and do other
stuff.......this issue ONLY HAPPENS when Vista does the "no desktop visible",
the same RIG, when it had the 17" BenQ FP72E, had NO ISUUES, using the
8800GTS, but use the VX2235WM (a widescreen 22" monitor), and we end up in
this predicament, and this issue will not resolve (albeit temporarily) untill
i do one of the fixes i listed earlier, i am sure this can be resolved by a
patch/bug in the Aero sys of the OS or something, (i tried to disable that
some where, but it did not work, i still boot up to a blank desktop, with the
"my documents" open and showing it's content from where i can browse my
PC....for shut down CTRL+ALT+DEL the loading window where you can select a
user is shown, and from there i can do a proper shutdown/restart of Vista

Carlos, boot up into safe mode gives me the desktop, but no prior restore
points work, only when i restore the image (using ACronis) "when the desktop
was showing" resolves this, when ultimately for no reason what so ever the
desktop, is, dare i say "unrenderable"..... presented with the issue
currently at hand

I am running Vista 32 with a 8500GT graphics card and a VX2226W monitor so
my configuration is very close to yours and I have never seen anything like
the problem you are having.
When you do have a desktop visible and you right click on it and select View
is Show Desktop Icons enabled?
Glad to hear that a shortcut to your My Documents folder is not in your or
the all users Startup folder.
If you create a new user does the new user have the same problems?

Ok Colin...my apologies... :)..... but dude, this problem has me so annoyed,
that it is ridiclous, i was so looking forward to using MCE, coupled on the
Vista ultimate, heck i even dedicated the fastest flash in my country that i
possesed (pakistan) a kingston DT2..... and plugged it into a internal PCI
USB2 card, this is recognised as being ready boost capable by default...so i
can use readyboost, compensated my weak CPU (lowest scoring in VISTA
experience) by the 8800GTS first and then the 8800GT, (i was under the
impression that perhaps..the Video processing engine (broken i) in the
8800GTS was causing problems......but as soon as i uninstalled the drivers,
cleaned up the Reg, and installed the GT, after a couple of days later, i am
at the same point where i left off, the 8800GTS.... so you can understand my
predicament, i have here a machine capable to do VISTA/DX10 gaming and at
high res (12x10 all high etc etc.) and i can't get the -bleeping- desktop,

JW....my man, you maybe running the 8500GT...but, i'd say you lucky, mon'
...... and yes, i have my show icons on desktop, and everything, vista took
such a long time to get optimised on my RIG, so that the Xperience was as
good as my XP's but sadly, nopes

the only the card runs

if

1_using a VGA cable on a DVI to VGA adaptor and then installing the det's
2_ using 640x480 mode to boot into normal vista32
3_using no det's aka no gaming/aero
4_connectiong the DVI cable back into the GPU, after a no desktop boot,
causing the PC to reinstall drivers for the VX, after which a couple of
boot's later , i have a desktop, only to loose it again, thus repeating this
"fix"

You might try installing the public Beta of Vista SP1 RC1. I have installed
it on 3 systems without any problems and it appears to have fixed some bugs
and to have improved the performance.

Ok JW, thanks man, i will try and find it and give it a shot....this will
take till tomorrow hopefully and then i get back to you guys

Ok guys , sitrep

applied the SP1 Refresh update, the update was smooth, and on the bottom of
the screen, eval version and the SP1's version was posted, but still in the
same predicament

now what????

i have just restored an image of Vista using Acronis, to a point when i
installed the 8800GT and the forcewares, so i will (should) have complete use
of my desktop

I need suggestions ppl.

thanks

Control Panel/Administrative Tools/system Config try various options such
as a diagnostic normal boot to see if you can find the program that is being
run on a normal startup to give you the problem that you are not having when
booting in safe mode.. The problem is apparently not based on a single
user's setting since when you created a new user the problem still occurred.
Also from Save Mode I suggest that you try lowering the display resolution
setting and again trying normal mode to see if a display resolution change
has any effect.

Guys if i drop the reso. on bootup..... the machine CAN show a desktop...but
switching it back to the regular reso. of 16x10 the OS upon start from a cold
boot, would do the whoel "no desktop" issue

and if you see on NVIDIA own forum, this issue is gaing a bit of a
following, as many have resorted to using VGA adaptors to output video to
VISTA, otherwise this problem crops up in various styles for DVI users
