I'm using a Minolta Dual Scan film scanner with Vuescan 8.1.9 and I'm
having a problem with the proper colors, only when I scan slides.
After I scan them and they look fairly good, I attempt to use the
Photoshop 5.5 auto levels to correct the colors and the results are
very redish etc. When I check the levels, I find the the green channel
is way off, approx a inch toward the middle on each end. When I use
auto levels, the bottom pointers are moved toward the end of the much
tighter group and the colors become very bad. If I use the Minolta
Dual Scan scan program this doesn't happen. There is no problem when
scanning negatives.
Any ideas, Thanks NRC

There's many possibilities why one channel comes out way off. With VS
you could have defined a wrong colour profile, or the scanner has a
cast to it.

Here's a solution: When you go into the levels tool, don't start by
adjusting the histogram for all channels at once. Begin with the
individual channels and adjust their white and black point, *not* the
middle slider! Be aware that you cannot use the preview image to
control the colour, adjust the points to the edge of the histogram or
try to play around a bit.

Usually it is not necessary to leave in those values which are just
there (very low on the y-axis).

Then go to all channels (RGB) and see if any further adjustment is
necessary; this will be the case if you want to open up or darken the
middle tones.

I've yet to find a better way to get rid of casts without losing data.

There is one feature of Vuescan I find very helpful. If you find a part
of the scene, often a very small part, that should be a neutral color,
gray or white, if you right click on it, Vuescan will adjust the color
balance to produce a fairly reasonable result.

Why do you use auto levels if the scan result is good? Simply don't do
it, but use manual levels adjustment instead, if you feel you need to
adjust white or black point or brightness. If posssible ajust the scan
to your need in vuescan already, f.e. with the technique Leonard
describes...
