I am experiencing some of the usual troubles installing the HP 4C in
98se. I thought Vuescan and\or Silverfast might come to the rescue, but
even when I install these programs without HP's programs being
installed, I still get the same errors. Scanner not communicating with
the software.

Are there any special fixes regarding Vuescan and Silverfast, or does
the problem lie entirely with the 4c's drivers?

As I have posted elsewhere in cps, this scanner has worked on desktops
running 98se and HP's software, so maybe the problem lies solely with my
ava-1640 slim scsi PCMCIA card.

When I recently checked the Silverfast site I found a more recent ASPI
version that what is on Adaptecs site. Installed it, still no go.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I had the same problem when I upgraded to 98se. I was using the DeskScan 2.9
driver. At that time I found the solution on the HP support site. The key to
my problem was cleaning ALL references to the HP drivers already installed,
as described by HP. This required me to delete appx. 25 entries manually.
When I upgraded to 2000 it picked up the scanner so easy I couldn't believe
it.

I just bought an used 4c to backup my IIcx.

Good Luck,

Bill

I tried the removal of these drivers as well. Still no go. I've been
wondering if there is one file I'm forgetting. Elsewhere I posted my
concern that maybe my problem lies with using drivers from the Polish
98se CD with my English installation of 98se.

BTW, were you also using the ava-1460?

It's great to hear from another fan of the 4c line (but not necessarily
HP). Please see the post about lamp replacement. I'll have final
details a bit later.

I guess I'll just stick with file removal. I'm beginning to think I
really need to look for my English language 98se -- at least search the
internet for those files and put them all to a floppy.

My next goal is to locate replacement drive motors and belts. Then I'll
open up my own IIc, 3c,4c,6100c repair shop. I've bought a few of these
on Ebay for about $5 (though an additional $20 or so for shipping). I
just couldn't pass up such an offer, as I've always just liked looking
at the scanner, let alone using it. When I do scan, and I scan a lot,
the the smoothness of the whole machine is an inspiration to
productivity. I have a bit of that feeling an INDY 500 driver has
communing with machine :)

I really don't know what your prob is.
I've run a IIcx on 98SE for 5-6 years now..have reinstalled couple of
times over the years too...
Never a prob (Deskscan 2.9).

Also, VueScan works fine with it, although I most routinely use the IIcx
as copy machine with the HP Copy util on day to day basis.

There IS a readme file in the Disk1 files, best I remember, that has
uninstall instructions, guess you've seen that?

Thanks for the reply, Mac.

I, too, can't imagine what the problem is. I had both this IIc and 4c
working on desktops with an Adaptec 2940.

I should say that I have been trying to get these two scanners running
on a laptop with an Adaptec 1460 PCMCIA SCSI card. however, currently,
for trouble shooting I am reinstalling them to a desktop with a SCSI
card known to work (AHA-2940).

I'm beginning to think there might actually be something wrong with the
two scanners, even though I did have them working previously. But before
I go that far and admit defeat, I'll blame the registry.

I've been through everything in the proper order, removing all scanner
and HP files. Through my travails I noticed some entries in the
registry.

Today or tomorrow, I'll do a fresh install of either 98se or XP on a
spare hard disk and see what happens. The Windows 98se on my laptop has
been installed for about 18 months. Another option is to install these
two scanners on a 98se computer that is already running a 4C flawlessly,
but I don't want to risk knocking that one working scanner offline,
especially as someone is currently using it to do a lot of scanning for
me while I play with these other two.

Mac, you've had your IIc's for a while. HAve you ever needed to replace
the lamps? I've done it on the IIc, but, obviously, have not yet been
able to test an actual scan. I have no reason to doubt it shouldn't
work.Although, I am using different bulbs, I think the Sylvania Design
50 is one of the best replacement bulbs ( but this is only from hours of
searching the internet and working through a series of educated
guesses). Once I get everything working, my next step is to experiment
with different bulbs.

The saga continues......

How fast can your IIC scan 300 dpi/1 bit/ letter? If I remember
correctly, I had my IIc doing this at two per minute. I was expecting
something about twice as fast. The 4c will do four such scans in 64
seconds.

No, but I have to clean the mirrors about once a year when I get yellow
streaks on the sides.
Actually, I haven't had to do it since I quit smoking.

Yeah, about 25 sec.
