Vuescan: What level of IR cleaning do people use?

Just curious, what level of IR cleaning do you use; Light, Medium or
Heavy? I used to use Light on Vuescan 8.2 and now think that I need to
use medium or heavy for 8.3.

Light was optimal for 8.2 as it didn't have the blurring the other
settings used, but in the new versions heavy does a much better job and
I can't see any softening compared to light (or none!). I've sadly
spent a good bit of time testing this as IR wasn't working at all for
me until recently. Canon FS4000US users should bump up negative IR
exposure to 3 from 1.

Ooooh, that's nifty! I've been using light since 8.2 as well and
never bothered changing beyond. Will definitely give it a try,
thanks!

Normally I don't use any with clean negatives or slides. If need be
I'll try light, then medium and if that doesn't work, then heavy.

There's no perceptible difference between light and heavy with my
scanner on non-dirt parts of the image with *recent* versions. I do
find that imperfections in the negative surface (processing residue?)
make IR cleaning necessary for me even for fresh negs. Clean slides
scan fine without IR; maybe black dirt stands out less than white
spots?

I suppose the obvious answer is use just as much as is necessary to deal
with the dust etc. Why use more?

Exactly. When I get home I can try to post some scans at different IR
cleaning levels. It seems that light cleaned 1/2 the dust, heavy did
the rest.

However Vuescan has apparently changed the IR again since 8.3.75 and
..80 (claimed fixes for 2 pass scanners) and I haven't tested the newest
versions.

FWIW: 78 is working purrrfectly for me with light IR cleaning.
Much better than it ever did.

The fixes for 2 pass scanners were in .79. I was having segfaults and Ed
fixed them when I sent him email.

Never mind- I tried a batch scan with a strip of negatives and IR
didn't work right at all- little black dots, IR not doing anything,
misaligned cleaning, etc.

Look at the grain, not image detail, and feel free to post your own
tests if you have a counterpoint to demonstrate.

Probably because the image itself is already somewhat blurred.

Not likely. The FS4000US apparently uses two different lightsources at
different angles to detect IR transmission differences. That has
historically resulted in varying levels of success from VueScan, much
more of an issue with that particular model than with other scanners.
