I recently purchased Vuescan (7.6.81). How do I tell when an updated
version is released and what do I do to download and update it?

Just check the Web site frequently. For the last couple of years, I think
there has on average been a minor version number upgrade every 1-2 weeks.
Not all upgrades will benefit your particular scanner, you'll have to check
the "changes from previous versions" link to see what has changed.

As an improvement suggestion, perhaps Ed Hamrick could add a "Check for
upgrade..." option under the help menu, which then could check for file
release date and offer to download a newer version.

With his recent overhaul of the web site he should definitely consider
this, as it isn't that easy to find out *what* the most recent version
is. He should at least name his distribution file not just
"vuescan76.exe" but insert the minor build number, too:
vuescan7683.exe. That way just hovering the mouse over the download
link would tell which version is current.

Well, the version number is nowadays mentioned on his webpage (maybe a
different color would make it better visible), but that would still require
you to remember the version number you currently have installed. It also
requires to first go to the webpage to find out.

Maybe Ed wants that for interest tracking purposes, but he could also reduce
bandwidth usage by skipping the need to download an HTML page only to find
there is no new version yet...
He'd still have the option of either firing up the webpage when a newer
version is available, or starting an immediately download.
