VueScan Update loses settings

When I update to the newest version of VueScan and it starts all the
settings are the same as the previous version which is fine. I can
even use it. OTOH if I close VueScan, the next time I start it the
settings are all back to the original defaults. The output file name,
counter to zero, and output directory are all defaults at this point.

Where I had been using the advanced options, they are now back to
basic.

I would think that with it coming up using the old settings, closing
it would keep the ini file the same.

What is happening and is there a way to keep the original settings
rather than having to completely reset everything.

Yes. Save Options. Load Options from File menu.

I did that last time and it does work, but it's not logical. If the
updated app already has the configuration I normally use once it's
installed, why does it lose them the next time it is started.

Same to me. I thought I had done something wrong. Is there some solution?

This is a perenial buggy situation. Simple work-around:

File|Save options

just prior to upgrade. Then:

File|Load options

after the second load of the new version. Only thing this does not
restore is window size/position.

It seems to actually be getting the init instruction from somewhere,
but way back. I thought of emailing Ed, but figured I have a simple
fix, so why bother. Perhaps if he reads this he'll look into it.

Because the settings are only in the Vuescan.ini file, and no registry
entries a created or changed for those settings. The newly installed
version, of course, overwrites your old .ini file

Correct, and an old version's ini file may conflict with new/changed
features, so it is the safest approach to start fresh. That is not to
say that there couldn't be some more automation when "upgrading"
(although the recreation of preferences takes me 1-2 minutes, and a
chance to reconsider some choices).

That's not quite what I was getting at.
I agree that it's well to start with the new ini file, but the updated
program doesn't, at least not the first time it's run. I agree too
that it only takes a minute or so to reconfigure if you save the old
defaults. Not all of them save, but most do.

It installs, asks if you want to run the program and then starts it
with the old ini. I would think it would start using the new, or
default ini, but instead it starts with the ini of the previous
incarnation..

Yes, same with me. I guess it gives an opportunity to save old
settings.
Since I always rename the old folder before installation of a new
version, the (at that time non-existent) vuescan.ini will be created
with default settings, so when I restart the application I'm back at
square one. However, the mystery remains; how does Vuescan know my old
settings while installing to a non-existing C:\VUESCAN folder (as I
just renamed the old one to e.g. VUESCAN8010)?
