VueScan scanner profiling question

The VueScan User's Guide has, in the section on scanner profiling, the
following text:
Every IT8 target has an associated data file that describes the exact color
of each square in the target. You should either rename this file
"scanner.it8" or put the file name into "Color|Scanner IT8 data".

I understand why this is necessary during the building of the scanner
profile (VueScan needs to be able to find the correct data file). But
after the profile is built, and when scanning film, is the data file
still needed? Or can I remove it?

I had been assuming that it was not needed and that all the required
information was in the profile (ICC file). But I am currently
troubleshooting a problem which requires me to check the correctness of
that assumption.

This is true.

This is also my understanding. I also simply renamed the data
file while using the new *.icc and Vuescan said nothing.

In this context I have a question which I meant to ask:
Why panel Color shows Color|Scanner ICC description (which
is simply blank if you elect the scanner ICC profile,)
Color|Scanner IT8 data and Show IT8 outline, if the task
set in Input|Task is not Profile?

The calibration data file is only needed with Profile creation, to
figure out what the expected color is versus the actual color as seen
by the scanner. Once the correction is calculated, the data file
serves no purpose until recalibration.

This is a big mystery. You can write a Scanner ICC description in this
field, but it won't show up in vuescan, since Ed apparently has no
access to this field if he loads and uses the profile. Strange enough,
that the lcms profiler that is based on the same library shows *only*
the description if you load a profile...

However, you can see it in other applications (like photoshop), but you
can't use the profiles there. So perhaps you write as description:
"This is a vuescan only profile, don't use"

Why all this fields are visible all the time, partly even if I don't
use scanner profiles, is beyond my understanding. I complained about
that long time ago, Ed complains about the tab pages beeing crowded but
it seems not to be possible to place all this profiling stuff into
separate, floating dialogs.

Ok, I would be grateful if there would be at least another option in
the 'Options' droplist: Basic, Standard, Advanced and Profiling...

It is also my observation that the ICC description will be stored
with the *.icc profile. This field should not appear as editable
entry if the task is not "Profile". But, we still would appreciate
the display of the description from the used *.icc profile!

This is possibly a good idea, albeit I still believe that
Input|Task provides already indication about the task and
Ed should simply disable these fields for Task=Scan, unless
we oversee here the reason for these fields?

Maybe Ed will see this question and reply?
