I'm trying it out.

Epson 4870 scanner.

I've built a computer to run PhotoShop manipulating big
files. 4GB fast ram. Windows 2000 sees 2,7 of it.

At the momemt I have;

Available physical memory
2,353,932kb

Available virtual memory
21,064,760kb

That should be enough, even to scan a 4x5 negative to make a
file just under 2GB. I do this with the Epson software.

But when I attempt to preview - not scan, preview - a 4x5
negative, I get the message that "unable to allocate 1816
MBytes of memory. Try increasing the amount of virtual
memory." Then it tries, and fails, to make a preview.

I'd like to make this software work. I scaned one 35mm
transparency and the scan was significantly better than the
Epson software scan.

What do I do?

Thanks,

Larry Jones

What are your settings on VueScan's (version ?) Input options tab, and
what does the status bar say about size?

Thanks for replying to my question.

I've made some progress and can now make a scan, but it's
small. Should be about 4x5 inches but is 2.4x1.9 inches.
Scanned two negatives, same result.

Version 8.1.43
Task: scan to file
Scanner: 4870
Mode: transparency
Quality: print
Media: color negative
Bits per Pixel: 48 bit RGB
Preview Resolution 4800 ppi
Rotation: flip
Mirror: checked
Autofocus: always
Autoscan: none
Auto Save: none
Auto Print: none
Scan from Preview: checked
Exposure clipping: 0

Status bar file size? Don't see such a thing. Wonderful
stumbling around a new software.

Although I'm able to enter the specific type of film, I
still need to make considerable color corrections before
saving.

Would very much appreciate help with file size.

Does this software have a way to scan multiple negatives or
slides at once as the Epson software does?

Thanks,

Vuescan has online documentation, and I am sure most of your questions
are answered in there, so I don't see why you have to stumble.

Okay, that 'explains' why you had some issues with Preview - not Scan,
the Preview is full resolution (some 19200x24000 pixels). What is the
progress you mention? Is it that you now can Preview (you mention
Scan)? Do you still get a memory allocation error message?

Output sizes depend on the Crop size, where you need to set the
preview area to "Crop box" or else it'll try to scan the entire platen
at 4800 ppi (way too large file). Output sizes are also controlled by
settings on the Output tab. What have you selected there?
Status bar file size? Don't see such a thing. Wonderful

Bottom border of the VueScan window will show feedback about output
file size.
Although I'm able to enter the specific type of film, I
still need to make considerable color corrections before
saving.

Depends on image (crop) content and white balance settings. Right
mouse button click on supposedly neutral colored area will get you
close.

There are some possibilities, but with almost 2 Gb images you'll need
to clear the memory before scanning the next, and determine the
position of the first image and spacing between images. It's in the
help file.

Thank you very much! I thought I'd looked everywhere on the
site and didn't find this.

Also, the whole html help file of your current version is as close as
F1 key (it's on your hard drive) :)

Bart,

I can now make a scan. Progress. However, the 4x5 negative
is scanned at 2.4x1.9 inches at 4800 ppi.

I'm sure there's a setting for this, but I can't find it.

Do you know what I need to change?

Thanks for your help.

With your help, I can now make scans. They're startlingly
sharper than scans from the Epson software that came with my
4870.

Really? Where?

Click "Help" in the menu bar and it'll take you to a version of the
same thing. When I click the "Help" menu (or just press [F1] ) and
select the "VueScan User's Guide," I get exactly the same screen as
what pops up at the URL provided by Wilfred. The only difference is
that mine's dated 2004, whereas the one at the URL from Wilfred is
dated 2005. It's essentially the same material in either one.
