VueScan: Not getting requested rez?

VueScan 8.2.32.

I've got Scan Resolution=4000, but for the last batch of 35mm negs I scanned,
ThumbsPlus says Resolution=991 x 991 or 956 x 956, or 933 x 933.... depending on
the frame.

Seems like Scan Resolution=Auto is overriding my spec of 4000.

Or am I missing something?

Oops.... Now that I've got my IQ above room temp (thank
heaven for coffee...) I would note that I misrepresented
ThumbsPlus' "Resolution".

Instead of "933 x 933", which is not a dpi measurement -
it is actually saying "Resolution=933 x933 dpi"...

Having said that, when I look at scans I've done last year
(with an older version of VueScan...) ThumbsPlus does
figures like Resolution=4056 x 4056 dpi.

How do you have "Output Tab>Printed size" set?
I've mine set to "Scan size", so I'll have a permanent record with
which of my scanners the scan was made, and whether I deviated from
native resolution.

It was set to (the default value of?...) 4x6.

I changed it to "Scan", re-scanned a frame, and the numbers shown by
ThumbsPlus
changed to 4000 x 4000.

Funny thing though, the actual rez of the scan did not seem to change. I
zoomed in on some letters on the side of a tour bus in the test frame and
the
image broke up at exactly the same zoom level in each scan.

Sounds like maybe I don't properly understand the significance of
"Resolution".

Yep. It has nothing to do with the actual content of the file, it just tells
programs that might print the image how big to print.
