VueScan Multi-pass Fuzzy At Three Passes

I find that I get detail resolution improvements to my images by using
VueScan's Multipass capability, but only when I do two passes. When
comparing a photo using three passes the image details start looking worse
(fuzzier) than when I use only a single pass. Is this about as much as I can
expect from using a flatbed. I'm using a Epson 3200 set to 3200 DPI. Do
people using dedicated film scanners get better resolution using 3...4...5
passes?. Or did I just hit the wall with 35mm? Thx.

You are almost certainly seeing the imprecision of a flatbeds mechanics,
not perfectly aligning on multiple passes. That and/or slight stepper
motor jitter.

Many film scanners are able to do multi-pass with more precision. Plus
some of the better ones like Nikon 5000 can do multisampling in a single
pass.
