VueScan Media setting: image or slide film?

I always have used the "image" setting for "Media" when scanning slides in
my film scanner (Acer 2720s). This was also recommended by the help-file
(user guide).
After installing the latest version 8.3.25 I discovered that this setting
will not return black anymore. The darkest parts of my scans have numbers
for RGB like 35,35,35 and higher. I have to raise black point to 10% to get
(almost) black parts in my scan.

When I choose "slide film" as Media (which I have never done before) and
choose in the "color" tab screen "Generic" for Slide/Negative/B/W
vendor/brand/type I get results like those I got in the past.

I cannot find the recommendation for setting "image" in the help-files
anymore. Is this changed?

With kind regards,

Delete all copies of the vuescan.ini file and then relaunch
Vuescan. You will have to search around to make sure you find
all the .ini files.
Sometimes upgrading from one version to another without doing this
leads to the oddest problems.

No help, same problem!

I have found the problem:

The vertical Y-axis in the histogram is not on position x=0
If you choose Graph type "B/W" on the Prefs panel then you can see where x=0
on the x-axis is when you try to pull the blackpoint-triangle to the left...
(blackpoint=0%)
When you choose a blackpoint which is not zero you see the histogram
shifting to the left, showing some sort of "negative" colour points? What
else are points left of the blackpoint setting? Darker than black?
This makes this histogram useless in my opinion, because you have no idea
how much of the picture is clipping on the black side!

It's probably just another Vuescan bug. Vuescan is notoriously
unreliable.

Try "re-installing" i.e. deleting the .INI file. After that start
changing options one at a time monitoring the histogram until the
problem reoccurs. Maybe that can throw more light on what's going on.

I'm not a Vuescan user but another possibility is that this "negative
black" is a Vuescan "feature". Namely, Vuescan does many things in
extremely weird ways which only make sense to the author. Just look at
the so-called user interface!

Don.
