My Minolta 5400 scanner has developed an apparent mechanical
malfunction. It seems that at the beginning of the actual scanning
process of each frame, the film carrier moves a bit , the scanner makes
a strange noise while attempting to move the carrier, but the carrier
remains stationary and as a result the scanned image is streaky beyond
all recognition.
I tried to switch to the Minolta scanning software and it worked just
fine!
I did some research on the web and found the following comment on a
forum:-
"I've done a little research and found that Vuescan and Minolta
software differently changed speed of a stepper motor advancing the
film carrier. Vuescan started slowly at the beginning of the frame and
then changed the scanning speed to higher abruptly. That was a moment
where the step motor jammed. I found this when I opened the casing to
see what was going on inside. It may be an electro-mechanical problem
with the step motor. It just could not carry out complex speed change
VueScan instructed it to do. I am not blaming VueScan but Minolta
software works with no such problems for me."
I sent a brief e-mail to Ed Hamrick just to establish if he knew
anything about this problem. I really just wanted to know if he thought
this was a mechanical problem or if it could possibly be a Vuescan
software issue but I did not get a response. Has anyone else
experienced similar problems with Vuescan and the Minolta 5400?
I really like the control that Vuescan gives me but this problem (which
all the signs indicate is a Vuescan problem) is getting on my nerves to
such an extent that I have abandoned using Vuescan altogether!
