Is it me or automatic cropping when scanning from file (RAW) doesn't
work? I scan to RAW first with crop set to maximum. I would like to
batch scan from RAW later with crop set to automatic.

Not really answering your specific question, but I would suggest:

1. My preference: Output the Vuescan raw file cropped already, by
setting an x and y offset and x and y dimension. Then, when scanning
from disk, set crop to maximum. You can also rotate the raws (in
Photoshop, or whatever), as required, to landscape, then no rotation
need be specified.

2. When you're scanning from disk from uncropped raws, simply specify
x and y offset and x and y dimension, per above, instead of using
auto.

That would be my preference too, but I have bunch of negatives shot
with some idiot point&shoot camera many years ago that didn't wind
film uniformly. Thus if I set predefined x and y offset I either lose
quite a bit of the image, or get black border. Auto crop seemed like
ideal option. Oh well, back to manual cropping.
