Vuescan and color profiles

Once again I've attempted to figure out how to incorporate
Vuescan's color profiling in my work flow. I'm still confused.

Case 1: I set a scanner profile to one I've created (with Monaco)
and set the output profile to "device". The file is output with no
embedded profile.

Case 2: Same as 1, but I set the output to AdobeRGB. The file is
output with this profile embedded.

Case 3: I scan with no profile assigned and then open the file in
Photoshop with no profile and using the
"no profile" dialog box, I set the profile to my scanner profile
followed by convert to AdobeRGB. This workflow gives the closest
match to the original.

So I'm not sure what is happening during the first two cases.
Can any Vuescan settings do the same function as case 3, or should
I just forget the profiling feature. I was trying to have Vuescan
do the open steps that Photoshop performs so that the files would
be delivered to the editor without the interruption of the open
dialog.

Advice, anyone?

VueScan only works with VueScan generated device/film profiles. These
are simple matrix profiles with a fixed gamma per channel, not as
accurate as 16bit TRC based ones, but they have the benefit of being
less sensitive to exposure differences.

Not sure what happens with a non-supported device profile (never tried
it). Possibly it is replaced by the built-in generic device profile,
then converted to and tagged with Adobe RGB
Case 3: I scan with no profile assigned and then open the file

I assume that with "scan with no profile assigned" you mean "Scanner
color space|Built-in", or do you mean "Output color space|Device RGB"?

I usually select the Scanner color space set to the VueScan generated
profile for the scanner/film type I used, Output color space set to
"Device RGB" and Color Balance set to None or Neutral. In Photoshop I
assign the scanner Profile from VueScan and convert to the Working
space.
