I just tried out Vuescan 8.11. I just don't see film negative for media
type under 'Input'. Doesn't Vuescan support film scan for Epson 3170?
Is there something wrong with my Vuescan setup?

You need to first set "Input|Mode" to "Transparency".

It does with my Win XP Pro setup.
Did you select Mode|Transparency, or does it say something else?

I believe it should.

When in doubt, close VueScan and just delete the "vuescan.ini" file.
Start your Scanner, and Restart VueScan. That will re-create the
vuescan.ini file, and start with a fresh default setup. It could be
that an Epson utility that is polling for the availability of the
scanner is blocking access for VueScan, but someone with personal
experience with the scanner would need to confirm that.

I believe it should.
It turned out that the scanner lid plug became loose so the film
scanning is physically not possible. Problem solved.

I used to scan things at 300dpi. But it's not on Vuescan's resolution
list. Are the values on the list scanner independent? Are 400 and
800dpi better suited for Epson 3170?

Those values are usually integer fractions of the native scanner
resolution (1/1, 1/2, ...), if that results in integer values.

Yes (3200/8=400 and 3200/4=800).

You can go in and manually set a resolution if I remember right. Look at
the complete list from the drop down.
