scanning velvia 50 on my minolta 5400 with vuescan 8.1.12 i'm getting a
lot of images covered in pepper spots all over the scan, in both light
and dark areas. this didn't happen with 8.1.6

however scans do seem a tiny bit sharper, just using default autofocus.
i don't really see any other improvements as per ed's "changes from
previous versions" could anyone enlighten me on those improvements?

how do i resolve this pepper spot issue? has anyone else encountered it?

i am aware of pepper spots of this nature in skies, but not all over the
image, but it don't happen with vuescan 8.1.6 on the same slide.

i'll try and post some images tomorrow.

i read the article and right at the bottom...

"The fact that Nikon ICE removes the specks without affecting the image
grain very much is pretty good confirmation of this"

have the changes ed has made to infrared cleaning, drawn my attention to
these spots which have always been there? i use light infrared cleaning
without grain disolver by default for all scans.

must try out version 8.1.13

SNIP

Also try scanning with the Grain Dissolver only. It can reduce the
visibility of peppergrain.

Could you post examples?

Pepper spots are characteristic of Fuji films. Problematic scans are
characteristic of a Minolta scanner that's being used with Vuescan.

Change your film type is the only way to prevent the spots.
Change your scanner software is the only way to get the best results
with the Minolta.

apologies i was out last night will endeavour to sort through a couple
of images tonight. as for vuescan, i've always been very happy with it
the dimage software can occasionally be half decent in between the blue
screens of death (on win 2000).

i think ed does a great job he gets a lot of complaints about vuescan,
which is very good value for money and on the whole does a very good
job. i've spent much more money on much worse software. if people don't
like vuescan then they can go and use something else, like their
proprietary software!

as for changing my film type i challenge you to recommend a better film
than velvia for landscape & nature photography? just have a look through
the bg wildlife photographer of the year entries and you can count on
one hand all those not using fuji film!

posted some examples at http://www.marona.co.uk/vuescan

i installed 8.1.14 which shows up the pepper grain just as much as 8.1.12

all the scans were 5400dpi, with default settings and light infrared
filtering. medium infrared on 8.1.14 does not remove the spots.

i have to admit i didn't try a scan on 8.1.6 without infrared to see if
the spots were there.

at one point i thought the 8.1.14 might have been a frcation sharper. i
never really been able to get manual focus working so i'm at the mercy
of autofocus.

Hello,
I've experienced similar problems using Microtek ArtixScan 4000tf and
ArtixScan 120tf to scan from colour negative film. I found the problem
to be caused by a factor called 'grain-aliasing' which tends to
pixilate the different dye layers in colour negative material. I've not
experienced the same problem using colour transparency material and
that includes Velvia 50 and 100, Provia 100 and a range of Kodak slide
films.
I've also detected the problem in monochrome negative scans albeit to a
much lesser degree. It appears that the problem is more prevalent in
negative materials.
I use Silverfast AI as my scanning software and it includes a filter to
reduce the effect of anti-aliasing. I don't find the filter very useful
as it tends to soften the image to hide rather than eliminate the
effect.
I don't know if this is what is causing your problem but it might be
worth doing some online research into the effect.
Cheers,
Bob Cooper
