Hello everybody!

I saw that there is a new Vuescan version for download (8.0.11). Does anyone
already have any experience with this version (compared to 8.0.10)?

Is the Vuescan recommendation generally to stick with the working version or
should one update regularly?

What has been actually changed?

Hi Ignacio,

it may depend on the scanner type that you are using. With my
HP S20 I have found that 8.0.10 was broken completely. 8.0.11
claims that it has fixed the problem, but when I downloaded it
it was still not working properly (some probems were apparently
fixed but not all.) So I'm still using 8.0.9 which works fine
for me.

Andy.

Use the principle that "if ain't broke then don't fix it". Only
download a new version if it has new features you want to use. Ed
Hamrick keeps a running list of what each new version adds, so you can
wait until enough useful changes have accumulated that you want to get
the latest version. But keep the old version in case there is some
glitch in the new version for your scanner and OS.

In fact, I've downloaded 8.0.11, and installed it under Fedora Core 2
Linux. With one change to a configuration file, and another change to
the memory allotted in Vuescan to scanning, it works fine with my Epson
3200 for scanning 4 x 5 film.

the hamrick web site includes release notes showing what has changed. I
review those every time I sit down to use Vuescan and check if anything
applies to my setup. Usually something is worth changing for me about
every 5-10 releases, sometimes more often. Bad surprises, usually small
and matters of user interface taste, do happen (eg. most recently the
scan dpi setting disappeared replaced by "quality" As a result I scanned
my first strip after the upgrade at half resolution).

One change I'm aware of: With 8.0.10 I started having problems batch
scanning from Vuescan raw file. Results were cropped, usually to
square, on some, ok on others. I went back to an earlier release, and
emailed Ed. He responded some time later (I believe he was on
vacation), saying he believed this problem was resolved with 8.0.11.

In short, each release may be improvement, bug fix, compatability with
new scanner, new feature, etcetera. I usually end up upgraded every
third or fourth version, if something catches my eye on the the
"what's changed" page. I also archive ALL my previous downloads, for
just-in-case.

The "Input|Scan resolution" setting is still there - you just have
to first set "Input|More options".

My apologies Ed! It was right in front of me the whole time.

Andy, if you still have the install file for 8.0.9 handy, could you
please email it to me? I installed 8.0.11 over my previous version
and now my HP S20 doesn't work like it should.

Thanks!
Bryan

Hi Bryan,

it is still here:
http://www.stanford.edu/~salnikov/vuesca809.exe

I guess we need to ask Ed again to provide archive of the
previous versions of Vuescan (and of course fix the bugs
in the new versions :)

For the record, this is what I found wrong with 8.0.11 and
HP S20:

1. Eject does not work, neither from keyboard (^J) nor
from menu. Had to press scanner button for eject.
2. With the fim strip in the batch mode it always scans
last frame on the strip, but scans it multiple times.

I stopped there, there might be something else.

Cheers,
Andy.

I haven't found a problem with the LS5000 ED.
