Every time I click on a "mailto:[email protected]" link, I get an error.
Says that mail program is not installed right, after clicking this error
message it opens about 42 IE pages ??

Vista ultimate new install.

Go to Control Panel | Default Programs and set WinMail as default even if
its already set so.

Just RE confirmed as default but same problem...:(

Okay. Go to the registry. This key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command

The (Default) value is

"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" /mailurl:"%1"

That should fix it. If you don't know how to use regedit, then read the
help file first and backup before you make changes.

OK, went to the REG, BUT was not where your said, so tried searching....
found the link under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WindosMail.Url.Mailto\shell\open\command

Any way...found it....BUT.....:(

It was already as you mencioned.....

REG_EXPAND_SZ "%ProgramFiles%\WindowsMail\Winmail.exe"/mailurl:%1"

:(((

Go to Start - then Default Programs and then to Associate a file type then
scroll right down till you find the Mailto option and then link that to
Windows mail!

Why it isn't set as a default is clearly a glitch!

This information is very helpful, but it pains me terribly that registry
edits would be needed in this day and age. I just configured a new Vista
machine and, god, it was hard to get Windows Mail to behave properly after I
configured Office Outlook and then realized that the person who owned the
machine would sufficate with Outlook. I removed the mail accounts from
Outlook and configured them on Windows Mail, but it was like performing hair
graft surgery.
