I can't find a solution anywhere to this problem I have with this vsdatant.sys file. I'm
trying to install cisco vpn client software in Windows XP MCE with SP2 and midway through
the install and I get:
Error 1304 Error writing to file:
C\Windows\system32\vsdatant.sys, Verify that you have access to that
directory.

I tried re-setting the whole system32 folder to normal, still get the
error.
tried installing the vpn client via the msi file, still get the error.
tried running the install as administrator, still get the error
tried logging in as administrator (with password) and installing from there,
still get the error.

Yes I have tried the cisco forums, no joy. But I think this is a problem with my Windows
XP, not with the cisco software I'm trying to install. After some investigating I
discovered that my windows XP will not allow the creation of a file called vsdatant.sys in
the system32 folder. As a test I created a text file and saved it as vsdatant.txt in the
system32 folder. I then renamed the file to vsdatant.sys but a second later the file
suddenly disappeared. Some process is nuking it.

The google trawl on vsdatant.sys continually brings up references to Zone Alarm but I
don't have zone alarm on my PC, I've never had it. I don't have any security software on
my pc, I've never even tried any security software except the windows firewall in the
control panel and I've set it both on and off. So something in xp is blocking the creation
of this file but I'm stumped. Thanks for any help.

If something in Your windows is playing jokes You have a chance to see
something in Your processes list. Use task manager or, better, ProcessXP to
get this list. For ProcessXP see

Check this as well. Comments especially:

The solution is to get rid of Zone Alarm, it is nothing but trouble on
most computers.

...and, he said he *doesn't* have Zone Alarm.

Second try would be that he has spyware/malware on the machine.

thanks for the responses but I never found a solution and in the end I gave up and nuked
the drive. Fortunately I keep full disc backups of previous setups, so I ran a restore and
took my PC back in time to the way it was 6 months ago. This time the installation worked
and no vsdatant.sys error. I would rather have solved this problem but hours of searching
produced nothing and I wanted to get the vpn working.
