Is it possible (by hook or by crook) to install Visual Studio /2008/ on
a Windows *2000* Server?

I don't think so Phill, I'm pretty sure that .NET 3.5 won't even run
on Window's 2000 Server. There may be ways, but I'm sure they'd be
against the TOS.

Well, why would you want to do that?! No, that's not supported.
