For reasons I have not yet identified I am having problems with the help
system in VS.net 2003. It seems as though it was working all right in the
past but it's not now. First of all I can't seem to get my search and help
icons to stay on the screen when in VS. In order to access the search
dialog I have to access the help menu and then select the search icon from
there.

Once clicked and the dialog retrieved I type in a word to search on like
"Insert" and select, for example, filter by Visual Basic. I run the search
and it comes back with many items. I select one of the result items and I
get a dialog/message saying "Please wait while Windows configures Visual
Studio.net English". Some sort of install begins and then I am asked to put
in my VS DVD in order to proceed. I do and the topic for the item I clicked
on does finally come up. If I close VS at this point and come back in and
do the same thing again, it goes through the same routine again and asks me
for the installation disk again. What gives? What can I do to get things
back to normal and fixed so that help is available all the time without a
re-install?

This is not the right group to post this kind of question. However, here is
what I remember when I installed almost a year ago. You must have selected
to install the VS using the deafault option, which install only a minimum
help features. During the installation of VS you can select the Customize
option and elect to have all the files from MSDN Library installed onto your
hard disk. So, You need to install additional MSDN Library features by
inserting the VS DVD into your DVD-Rom and selecting the Product Document
option when the Setup screen appears. The April 2003 MSDN Library has 3 CDs
so make sure that you have enough disk space.
