Using Windows 2000 Professional...

I lost the ability to "connect to a private network
through the internet" as a Network Wizard option (it is
grayed out).

I use a 3COM 905 ethernet card where I have updated the
driver about one month ago. Some time after that I noticed
the above problem.

I reinstalled service pack 4 and that has not resolved
this problem. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You probably uninstalled IP or caused it to fail to bind
with the NIC driver problem -- or don't have an address
configured etc.

Re-install the 3com driver explicitly -- you might even
visit their site and try for the new one (you will of course
have to find a machine to do the download and put it on
a floppy or burn a CD, but you are able to send news
messages so likely you have another machine or at least
access....

Thank you for the suggestion. I suppose I could give that
a try. I can not imagine how that would help as I have
already installed there latest driver. Although at the
time I did that install it also installed some of their
software in addition to the driver.

Well, the most likely reason for that missing option
is that you have no network connection to establish
it over.

Get your IP-NIC working and it will likely return,
but if that NIC isn't working you have problems
anyway.

Herb, as you suggested I reinstalled the driver (latest
from 3COM). No change. Meaning the problem remains.

Note that I do have internet connectivity so the NIC is
working. The 3COM dignostics utility indicates the NIC is
working. The OS device manager also indicates "the device
is working properly" (although we can take that with a
grain of salt).

Before doing the 3COM driver install (previously, before
the problem) I seem to recall that the driver may have
been a microsoft driver which was likely installed at the
time I installed Win 2000 PRO over ME. That driver was
more recent (file date).

I am attempting to download a microsoft network adapter...

No, that is sufficient -- if IP is working is working and
bound to the adapter so the idea of it not appearing just
because you have no NIC is covered and we should
dismiss it.

I was under the impression that your NIC was malfunctioning
in other ways.

I don't think that will help -- 3Com is likely newer (or same)
but there is no telling which is better.
