I have been successfully using a VPN connection on my
home system (Win2000Pro OS) to a server at my office for
a couple of years. Very recently, the desktop icon I
setup to execute this connection failed and I can no
longer configure any VPN connection. The option
is "greyed out" on the setup network connection dialog. I
configured another computer in my home without any
problem, and am now using this for access.
Any suggestions how to fix?
Thanks...

Use services.msc to see if the remote access auto connection manager is set to
automatic startup and is running/started and that the remote access connection
manager and telephony services are set to manual or set them to what is on the
working computer which should be the same or very similar. None of those should be
set to disabled. It may help to look in Event Viewer for any error messages that may
be related. --- Steve

Thanks Steve,

That's exactly what I did.
No, remote access auto connection manager wasn't running
because remote access connection manager wasn't running
either. They were set to manual as well. When I attempted
to start the service, I received the message "Could not
start the Remote Access Connection Manager service on
Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied." It had
nothing to do with log-on priviledge however.
So I found Microsoft Knowledge base article #829779
explaining a problem with SP1 for Windows XP installed
and then placed out of sync. There was a registry fix
method suggested. Problem...I have Windows 2000 Pro and
found no similar reference for that version. But the
article was specific to my problem, so I backed up the
registry and exported a copy of the rasman key for safety
and implemented the registry fix as detailed. PRESTO.
Everything came back, including the original connections
listing. Whew! It must have happened as a result of my
install of SP4 on my Windows 2000 Pro.

Thanks again for your timely response...

Stew
