I have installed a Windows 2000 Server on our network. I
am trying to set up VPN services on it. It seems as though
when I enable the vpn through RRAS I loose my connection
to the internet from that server. Also I cant terminal
service in from a remote site. That server is a multihomed
server with a public and private address. I have used the
public address for the vpn and clients get an ip from a
static pool. I am kinda new to Microsoft, I have worked
with Novell for the last 10 years but I am in the process
of getting Microsoft certified. Am I doing something wrong?

Greetings, and thank you for your generous offer to help the royal
family of Nigeria with this transfer of funds. I have spoken to registered
agent in your country who says:

Mike, when you enabled RRAS and the VPN on your multihomed machines,
RRAS automatically shuts down all ports on your external interface except
those relating to the VPN itself. This is why you can't ping or access the
Internet from that machine. The idea here is that you never want to expose a
NIC of a Windows server directly to the Internet. There are several
approaches you can take here:

1) You can set up your internet explorer to use an internal proxy
server. That way you can at least browse the web from your VPN machine. Of
course, this only works if you have a proxy server on your internal network.

2) If you need to access the Internet from the VPN machine, for example
to download a MSFT service pack or patch, you can manually disable RRAS,
download your patch, and then manually start up RRAS again.

3) You can go into the configuration screen of RRAS and manually open up
the ports that you want to use. This is typically not a very secure thing to
do though.

Regarding using Terminal Services from the outside... What you'll need
to do is VPN into that box and then point your TS client to the INTERNAL
interface of the box.

hope this helps,

The Royal Family of Nigeria wishes you the best and that you prosper for the
help provided in this important transfer of funds, bless you...

David
