Jack

Hello,

I looked through the other posts and tried some of the
suggestions, still unable to mapp drives.

I have an XPHome laptop at home connected to DSL and
Router. At work I have Windows 2K Advanced Server with
VPN setup. I am the only user that needs access. I set my
dial-in properties to Allow Access.

I created a network connection on the xp laptop to VPN to
my work. When I click on the connection it asks for
username and password, then shows connecting to server,
authenticates and connects. I have the Icon show in the
task bar. This tells me I am connected.

I added my Laptop machine name to the Active Directory on
the server.

I cannot seem to mapp a drive...

Any idea's
TIA

Jack

XP Home cannot join a domain. You will need to use some other method to
access files on the server. Can you see the shares using net view
\\servername ?

It could be a name resolution problem. Can you see the shares using
\\IPaddress?

You could try adding a hosts or lmhosts file to the client to resolve the
name to an IP address.

To solve the credentials problem, you could make the client's local
workgroup/username/password exactly the same as the
domain/username/password, so that the client's credentials are valid on the
server.

Bill,
Again, Thanks for the reply.

I was unable to Mapp with the IP Address (\\IP Address).
I am the only one trying to gain access and I am the
Admin on the Server. I am trying to login as
Administrator. It authenticates but won't let me mapp
drives.

TIA
Jack

Exactly what happens if you go to a command prompt and type in net view
\\servername ?

Bill,
This is what I get.

System error 123 has occurred.
The filename, directory name, or Volume label syntax is
incorrect.

TIA
Jack

I presume that message comes up when you use the IP address. It comes up
if the name is numeric. What about if you use the actual name of the server?

Is the server running DNS? Does the client have the correct DNS server
address and DNS suffix?

Bill,
I tried it both ways and still came up with the same
result.
The server is running DNS. I am running a winxp home
laptop client to connect. What do you mean by "Does the
client have the correct DNS server address and DNS
suffix?"
I have the workgroup setup the same as the LAN PC's, My
login information is the same.

TIA
Jack

The remote client can only use the DNS service on the server if it has
the DNS server's IP address and its domain name. When you make a VPN
connection, the client should get the DNS server's address as part of the
connection process. Check the client's properties after you connect.

To resolve a name like "server", the client also need to know what DNS
suffix to add. If your DNS domain name is company.com, then the client needs
to look in DNS for server.company.com . You can set the DNS suffix you want
the client to use in the advanced TCP/IP settings of the connection
properties.

Hi Bill,
Sorry for the delay.
I tried your suggestions and still not able to Mapp. I
logged in to the server via VPN from my Win XP Home Laptop
and then went to the server and it showed me that I was
logged in. Still can't understand why it won't let me
access the shared drives.

hi Jack,

to get mapping to work over VPN you need to implement WINS. DNS does not
work over VPN. Once you've got WINS up and given all your LAN machines a
WINS server address then try to connect via VPN and do "net share
\\sharename. If that works then you can also map a share.

hope this helps.
Dave

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply.

I have WINS setup on the server. Is this where you are
talking about? If not could you explain.

Thanks
Jack
