Laptop / Desktop thru same router.

Laptop connects to dest VPN addr without problems.

Desktop will not.
Both 'puters latest Xp patches on them.

Everything uninstalled in desktop that I think would make a difference.

CAn anyone help?
Even reg keys which I could copy from laptop to desktop would be nice.
Thanks.

What's the error code when the desktop tried to access the VPN?

Thanks Robert but I don't think it is this.

1. I have port forwarded the port to the correct desktop computer. Made
no difference.
2. Turned off port forwarding for 1723 and still was able to connect
via laptop to same VPN server. Laptop sits beside desktop and goes out
thru the same router, no differences there.

The problem is in the desktop somewhere. I have already done a sfc
/scannow and this made no diff either.
I tried using cisco vpn client but it only seems to handle ipsec
protocol and not pptp.

I have also used other vpn software to get from my xbox vis ICS out to
the XBconnect and Xkali servers(at least I think it was vpn they used).
I uninstalled the PC side of these programs but still no joy.

I am at my wits end but there is too much at stake to rebuild the
desktop, it would take me weeks if not months to get back to the
current platform, and who is to say that anything I install inbetween
the rebuild and when I have it the way I want it will not break the VPN
again!
I do though have just one other point which may/may not be relevant. I
cannot use MS access 2003 on my computer cos it says the security DB is
missing and I have never been able to fix that with, but maybe the
security db also uses some of the same functionality that the vpn link
does!

Thanks for your help.

I think this is the problem "Turned off port forwarding for 1723 and still was able to connect
via laptop to same VPN server". If you use PPTP, you must have 1723 port open. If you turned off port 1723, it still works. That tell me some thing wrong.

I am able to pptp via vpn inside a vmware image, fedora rc5 with
pptpconfig. It connects and immediately disconnects when I try to do
something but that is more to do with the NIC being bridged rather than
having it switched I think, so, the problem is definately in the XP box
somewhere. I checked the pptp and the rasman setting between laptop and
desktop but they are the same. vmware player is not the problem either
cos I had it on the ltop also.

Another point though that I have just found today.
Trying to use DRTCP to check the MTU etc. DRTCP crashes on my desktop,
it did not do that a few months back!
