I think this is the problem "Turned off port forwarding for 1723 and still was able to connect
via laptop to same VPN server". If you use PPTP, you must have 1723 port open. If you turned off port 1723, it still works. That tell me some thing wrong.

Thanks Robert but I don't think it is this.
1. I have port forwarded the port to the correct desktop computer. Made
no difference.
2. Turned off port forwarding for 1723 and still was able to connect
via laptop to same VPN server. Laptop sits beside desktop and goes out
thru the same router, no differences there.
The problem is in the desktop somewhere. I have already done a sfc
/scannow and this made no diff either.
I tried using cisco vpn client but it only seems to handle ipsec
protocol and not pptp.
I have also used other vpn software to get from my xbox vis ICS out to
the XBconnect and Xkali servers(at least I think it was vpn they used).
I uninstalled the PC side of these programs but still no joy.
I am at my wits end but there is too much at stake to rebuild the
desktop, it would take me weeks if not months to get back to the
current platform, and who is to say that anything I install inbetween
the rebuild and when I have it the way I want it will not break the VPN
again!
I do though have just one other point which may/may not be relevant. I
cannot use MS access 2003 on my computer cos it says the security DB is
missing and I have never been able to fix that with, but maybe the
security db also uses some of the same functionality that the vpn link
does!
Thanks for your help.
